Hello Priscilla,

Here is a question for you at the end of a busy week: How much finished work is still waiting to be billed?

I do not mean work still waiting on the crew. I mean work that is done, the truck has pulled away, the customer feels taken care of, and everyone in the field is already focused on the next job. Meanwhile, back at the office, somebody is still looking for a change, a vendor invoice, a missing note, or the signoff needed to send the bill.

That is the part of the work I want you to pay closer attention to, because the field may be finished, but the business is not. Not yet.

I see this happen more often than most owners realize. Everyone is moving fast, the next job is already demanding attention, and the closeout details feel small compared to everything else competing for time. But those details determine whether completed work turns into billed work, and whether billed work turns into cash flow when you actually need it.

The company has already paid for the labor, the materials, the overhead, and the time it took to get the work done. If the billing handoff is weak, the money lags behind the effort, and that strain shows up somewhere else in the business.

If you want to see whether this is happening in your company, do not start with the jobs that went sideways. Start with a few jobs that looked finished and follow them all the way through to the invoice. Look at where they waited, what information was missing, and who had to go chasing it down. That will tell you a lot about whether your closeout process is helping cash move or quietly holding it back.

If that sounds familiar, take a look at [this week’s article]. I break down where the handoff gets stuck and what you can do to make finished work truly invoice-ready.

💡 WISDOM

The companies that keep learning usually are not the ones with extra time lying around. They are the ones making a deliberate choice to step out of the daily scramble long enough to compare notes, sharpen judgment, and see what is changing around them. That habit matters. In this kind of market, good work still matters, but paying attention matters too.
